My husband forgot to take the trash can to the curb on trash pick up day this week. I heard the truck coming so I dashed outside just in time to get our load added to the collection. It was cold outside and I was making a run for the warmth of my house when I heard my neighbor whom I hadn't seen in a while call to me.

"You're looking slim and trim!"

"I am?" I was shocked that she could tell a difference in my shape.

I had been eating a low-fat diet for about three weeks and I could tell a difference in the way my clothes fit but my weight hadn't changed when I had my doctor's appointment last month. I figured it was just my wishful thinking, but when Wanda noticed a change I realized my eating plan must be working.

Speaking of doctors, mine wants to put me on cholesterol-lowering medication, but I begged him to let me try to get the levels down through diet and exercise. He's giving me three months or I'm on the pill!

I know that cutting out refined sugar and excess carbohydrates and eating a low-fat, high-fiber diet will bring the levels down-especially if combined with regular exercise. Even a small amount of exercise is helpful. I've done this plan before but I quit during the holidays when all that scrumptious high-fat, sugar sweet food tempted me.

Staying consistent with my plan is my downfall. I've found that when I completely deprive myself of everything I love to eat I fall off the diet wagon before it hits the first bump on the dusty trail.

Since I have no choice but to adhere to a healthy eating plan that will lower my cholesterol, I've got to have something I know I will stick with. My solution is the 80/20 plan. I'll stay on my plan 80% of the time, but I'll allow myself some flexibility 20% of the time. I can monitor this by how many fat grams I'm taking in during a 24- hour period. Eighty-percent of the time I will make sure I take in less than 60 grams of healthy fat per day. Other times, I'll let my taste buds have a treat and splurge with a small taste of something I crave.

Having flexibility in my health plan will encourage me to stay with it and get myself into better condition; hopefully without medication.

The Nutritional Legacy of the Atkins Plan

Doctor Atkins was a real live cardiologist who was interested in alternative healthcare and in ways to help his patients lose weight. In the 1970s, he wrote a relatively famous book, "Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution". In his book, he wrote of a diet recommendation that was completely different from the traditional diets of his day. His book was very popular and many sought "The Atkins' Diet" as a way to keep eating protein and fat, while avoiding carbohydrates.

The Atkins Plan was very controversial. It was so high in fat and protein that other cardiologists often refused to use it as it was felt to raise the fat and cholesterol in the diet. Some doctors felt the diet was a "heart attack waiting to happen". Even in the 1970s, doctors knew that cholesterol was bad and that it caused arterial plaques to form in the heart, resulting in a heart attack. While good ways to lower cholesterol weren't known back then, a diet low in fat was felt to be a way to reverse the effects of heart disease.

The Atkins Plan was also high in protein. Protein isn't inherently bad, especially for body builders, but few nutritionists recommend eating it in high amounts. A high protein diet can cause kidney disease and even gouty arthritis. The meat group used so much in the Atkins diet is actually recommended in limited amounts for those wanting to lose weight by most nutritionists.

Carbohydrates are to be limited, said Dr. Atkins. He felt dieters should count carbohydrates on his diet and eat very little bread or pasta. The only carbohydrates recommended were those found in fresh vegetables like salads, often served with fat rich salad dressing.

In one Atkins menu, it was recommended on one diet plan to eat as many pork rinds as you wanted, using a tuna salad as a dressing. When was the last time that a weight loss diet included unlimited pork rinds? Pork rinds are considered one of the worst snack foods out there, much less something you should eat for lunch.

There were those who waited to see what would happen to Atkins himself because of his own adherence to the Atkins diet. In fact, Dr. Atkins did develop a form of cardiomyopathy. While his family said it was unrelated to the diet, this is a fact that could never be proved. A year later, at the age of 72, he slipped on the ice in front of his office and diet of brain trauma. The status of his coronary arteries remains unknown.

In today's time, it is well established that heart disease can be prevented by lowering cholesterol and fat. While we have medications for this condition, dieticians recommend a low fat diet for those at risk for heart disease, including diabetics. Here's The Real Reason Why Dieting Won't Help You To Lose Body Fat

You may not like what I’m about to say, but dieting alone will not help you to lose weight. Watching your diet alone is not going to yield results unless it is coupled with proper exercise. You have to make a conscious effort for this. And the solution for this is a workout routine. Yes there are people that lose weight just from cutting down on their fat intake, carbohydrate intake, protein intake, or calories in general; but have you seen the results under their clothes? It is not a pretty sight! Without exercise (weight training in particular) your body has no way of toning up, and you could be left with near sagging skin with a non attractive shape. Also, losing weight from diets is mostly water weight loss and not fat loss. Do you want to lose water from your body and become dehydrated? Or do you want to lose Fat? The absolute only way to burn a high percentage of body fat is through exercise. The only reason why anyone should choose a diet plan is to see which one can help complement their workout program. The diet plan you choose should be one that you can stick to for the rest of your life, and it should be healthy for your body. Diet is such a short term word, so think of dieting as changing your eating habits for the long term. Your eating habits should provide you with enough protein for your muscles and enough carbohydrates for energy as well as other vital nutrients.

Stay away from diets that focus on losing weight quickly...

That said, you should still cut down on your calorie intake to lose weight, but you also must know how many calories per day is right for your body.

Stay away from diets that say you must eat protein and carbohydrates separately...

Protein and carbohydrates work together within your body; they are team players, not individuals.

Think of it like this:

Mr. Protein needs to take a taxi to get to the muscles cells to help build and condition them. Mr. Insulin is the taxi and Mr. Protein is not capable of calling a taxi, so Mr. Carbohydrate will always call Mr. Insulin to transport Mr. Protein to the muscles. The muscles cells love Mr. Protein, but they also must have Mr. Carbohydrate for energy. Mr. Carbohydrate is very outgoing and there is a lot of him to go around, but too much of him is bad. On the other hand, not enough of him is also bad.

Muscle cells only need enough carbohydrates to fill the glycogen stores. If more carbohydrates are present, it will get stored as fat. Eating protein and carbohydrates will slow down the absorption of carbohydrates which means that your body will have time to burn off the extra carbohydrates before they are stored as fat. So why not just significantly lower your carbohydrate consumption? Because too much protein and very low carbohydrates will cause you to overburden your liver and kidneys; could cause dehydration (most people do not realize that metabolizing protein requires you to drink more water); and your body will not get the right amount of its preferred source of energy-carbohydrates.

So you see, eating these two nutrients together allows your body to function like it should. The key is to know how much carbohydrates and protein is the right amount to satisfy your body’s needs.

Bottom Line when it comes to dieting and weight loss: Losing weight is easy. Losing weight by losing fat the healthy way is more of a challenge. Don't get caught up into just losing weight. Understand that you need to stay healthy at the same time that you are losing weight by losing fat.

I was driving past the gym the other day and I was actually impressed at how full the building was with people diligently getting their workout for the day in. Perhaps it’s because it is summer time here in Los Angeles and everyone wants to look good for this time of the year.

Well, as motivating as this may be, and as much as I honestly applaud their efforts, I couldn’t help but wonder how many of these obviously dedicated people were concerned with not just the external appearance of health but the inside as well.

It is documented that people spend loads of money on the new weight-loss pill or supplement guaranteed to 'make you eat less and increase your metabolism...' and in spite of whatever side effects the product may contain, the average Joe, still thinks this quick fix will be worth the risk.

What most people fail to realize is most fitness experts and bodybuilders who may use or endorse such products have a tendency to atrophy and wear down prematurely as sooner or later, these bodies, enhanced by unnatural substances have a tendency to pretty much degenerate.

Therefore to lose 10 pounds of fat in several weeks you would need to consume 35,000 fewer calories or burn 35,000 calories more through exercise. Neither is likely to happen.

So, the best way to lose weight and become more healthy is to eat a balanced diet. Don’t cut out all your carbs, but don’t go overboard with them either. In addition to eating well, exercise in a proportional amount to what you are eating. Exercising too much is as bad as exercising too little.

Warm-up

You must prepare your body before taking part in physical training, sports competition, or vigorous physical activity. A warm-up may help prevent injuries and maximize performance.

The warm-up increases the body’s internal temperature and the heart rate so that more oxygen-rich blood can be pumped through the muscles. The chance of getting injured decreases when the heart, muscles, ligaments, and tendons are properly prepared for exertion and, vica versa the risk of injury increases unnecessarily when you do not go through a proper warm-up.

A warm-up should include some running-in-place or slow jogging, stretching, and calisthenics. After a proper warm-up, you have prepared your body for a more intense conditioning activity.

Cool-down

You should cool down properly after each exercise period, regardless of the type of workout. Even swimming needs a cool down. The cool down serves to gradually slow the heart rate and helps prevent pooling of the blood in the legs and feet.

During exercise, the muscles squeeze the blood through the veins. This helps return the blood to the heart. After exercise, however, the muscles relax and no longer do this, and the blood can accumulate in the legs and feet. This can cause a person to faint. A good cool-down will help avoid this possibility.

During the warm-up you specifically engaged the muscle groups that you would be using during the conditioning activity. You do not have to engage the same muscle groups again for the cool down. For a proper cool down you can walk and stretch until your heart rate returns to less than 100 beats per minute (BPM) and heavy sweating stops. This usually happens five to seven minutes after the end of the conditioning activity.

You can check your BPM on the radial artery on your wrist (just above the base of the thumb), a carotid artery on your neck (just beside the Adam’s apple), or by putting your hand over your heart. Count the beats for 10 seconds and multiple by 6 to get BPM.

Before starting this Carb-less intense diet I weighed in at the great weight of 370 lbs. Yep, I was a big boy. Well, I started losing weight and after a few months I was approaching 300 lbs. Actually, I did see 299 but then I got cocky and started cheating a little bit and before I knew I hit 318.

That was when I realized I had a serious eating problem. Unfortunately, I had to get back on the diet and try again. Well, it was hard but no pounds were dropping. So I figured I had to change things drastically. And here is what I did.

This just blows my mind!

After eating 2 slices of bacon at breakfast
After eating 2 patties of sausage.
After eating 5 slices of pepperoni as mid morning snack
After eating 3 Hot Dog wieners nuked for lunch
After eating 2 scoops of Ice Cream for afternoon snack
After eating 8 chicken hot wings for supper

And

Drinking eight 16.9 oz waters through the course of a day.

But wait it gets better.

Eating this same regiment for 7 days straight you will NEVER guess how much weight I lost.

Come on Guess.

One pound.

Two pounds.

Come on. Get serious.

Let me tell you this. I weighed 318 pounds when I did this experiment.

Zero exercise and no deviations from this menu.

Did it drive me insane? Yes. Was it hard? Yes. Can I do this forever? Absolutely not!

Here is the breakdown:
Zero carbs for the bacon.
Zero carbs for the sausage.
Zero carbs for the pepperoni.
Three carbs for the Hot Dog wieners.
Four carbs for the Ice Cream.
Four carbs for the Hot Wings.

This comes to eleven carbs for the day.

Oh! One more thing. We have all heard about Trans Fat being bad. I just double checked what labels I did have and there are zero Trans Fat grams in my diet. Whew! That was close. So far. I did fish through the garbage to find the ones I threw out over the weekend but it was too late. I will track that stuff for the next week.

Oh! The weight loss.

Okay here is the total Loss for the week.

10 pounds! Now I am at 308!

Stay tuned because I am going into week two doing a deviation.

Remember, no exercising yet. And to be honest this is killing my will power.

So why am I doing this. I want to lose weight but like you I am afflicted with a terrible and suffering disease; it is called EATING. More on that later.
