How To Cope With Severe Morning Sickness



Are you pregnant? Congratulations on your new addition. Is this your first child? If so, you may not know how it is going to go. If this is not your first, you may be thinking about the severe morning sickness you had, or avoided, the first time around. You never know how each pregnancy is going to go, and you certainly have no idea what is going to happen with your first baby. If you find that you end up with some serious morning sickness, you have to know how to control it and when you need to talk to your doctor about what is going on.

Though a high percentage of pregnant women get some type of morning sickness, not all with have what would be called severe morning sickness. Some women lose weight during the first three months because they can not keep much down, but that is not a surprise. The problem becomes cause for concern when nothing stays down no matter what happens and a women loses a lot of weight. If that happens, the baby is in danger. If you are not sure if you are having a problem or not, talk to your doctor about how you are feeling. Don't assume your sickness is normal. It may not be.

Some people suggest that eating something right before they get up can cut down on severe morning sickness for some women. That something should be had before they get up to use the bathroom or before their feet hit the floor. Have something there on the night stand to have the moment you wake up. If you have a spouse that gets up when you do, ask them to bring you something. You may have to try a few things before you find a food that helps, but most have luck with crackers, dry toast, or something they are craving. It may not work, but it is worth a try.

Severe morning sickness is probably going to last all day. Try to get at least something down, and drink flat ginger ale to see if that helps. Ginger is a natural way to calm the stomach without worry. If you find that you can not eat anything and ginger is not helping, you may have to talk to your doctor about help with your upset stomach. Some women have to take something to alleviate the problem so that they and the baby remain healthy. This is only given in bad cases though.

There are other small things you can do to help with severe morning sickness. You can try motion sickness bands that go on your wrist, or you can try to lay down each time you do not feel well, though that is not possible for all women. Avoid foods that are heavy in fats and sugars, as they can overwhelm the body and the digestive system. Look to fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains, as they may sit better in your stomach. Eat smaller meals throughout the day instead of heavy ones, and always talk to your doctor when you know something is just not right.
